The largest surviving 19th and 20th century sugar plantation complex left in the United States. Nearly 60 original structures. The general store contains many tools and farm implements originally used in the cultivation of sugar cane as well as locally made arts and crafts. No admission fee. Church Rectory
Renaissance Romanesque in design with several major features reflecting architectural design common to the churches in Paris and Rome. A splendid Rose Window to the rear is modeled after the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Spectacular stained glass windows and gold-veined Egyptain marble on the altars. Guides tours by appointment only. Donation to church appreciated.

Lafourche Parish Tourist Commission
Freddie John Falgoust, a native of Raceland, was killed on the USS Augusta in 1937 while the ship was on the China Sea. A stray shell from a Japanese warship meant for the Chinese hit the USS Augusta killing Falgoust instantly. Following exhaustive investigations, Freddie John Falgoust was officially honored as the first casualty of World War II. The Congressional Recoed of October 15, 1987, certifies Freddie with this great honor.
A spendid display of this historic event, along with many of Freddie and his family's personal pictures, can be seen at the Lafourche Visitor Welcome Center where LA Hwy. 1 meets U.S. 90. The memorial is on the Visitor Center grounds. Freddie's tomb can be visited at the St. Mary's Nativity Church Cemetary, five miles north of the welcome center on LA Hwy. 1.

All along Bayou Lafourche, in the small towns, Mardi Gras parades are family oriented and just as elaborate as in larger cities but without the crowds. For two weeks prior to Mardi Gras Day, the Cajuns celebrate a wholesome, madcap experience enjoyed by all ages. Parades are held in sereral communities where groups of families and friends get together to eat, drink and enjoy the parades. Bar-b-q pits and crawfish boils line the parde routes where visitors are always welcome to join in the fun!
